About this spot
In the center of the Old Quarter is Hang Be Market. Hang Be is known for the good quality of its produce. You will find everything you need to make a delicious Vietnamese dish—fruits, dried food, meat, etc. In 2010, the market was moved into a building by the Red River, but in recent years the local people moved the market back to the sidewalks. Hang Be was one of the first markets to sell “ready-to-eat” food. Try the spring rolls, cha ca (fishcake), ca kho (stew fish) or thit kho tau (caramelized pork and eggs).

The Old Quarter is the historic heart and soul of Hanoi. It dates back to the 11th century when the capital was moved from Hoa Lu to Hanoi. It soon attracted skilled crafts people who worked in guilds. They often settled on one street and specialized in one good or service. These streets earned the Old Quarter the nickname “36 Old Streets” and many are still named after the product they specialize in. In case you are wondering the word “hang” does not mean street but merchandise. Today the citadel and the Ô Quan Chuong gate are reminders of the past.

Ô Quan Chuong Gate is the only gate left of the wall’s 21 gates that once protected the royal family and people living inside the Citadel. The gate was built in 1749 and reconstructed in 1817. The gate is named after a Vietnamese soldier who showed courage in defending the gate against the French.
