About this spot
The Damara are one of the oldest tribes in Namibia. They were hunter-gatherers and herders of cattle, goats, and sheep. They make up 8.5% of Namibia’s population and live mainly in the northwestern region of the country. They are closely related to the Himba and Herero people.

The Damara are divided into clans, each headed by a chief, with a King ruling over all the clans. Some families live on farms, carrying on their traditional ways and becoming rich in cattle and sheep farming. Traditionally, men hunt and women take care of the household chores.

Their culture was almost obliterated by colonization. The Living Museum of the Damara is an attempt to reconstruct that lost culture. On your visit you will experience their daily routine including interacting with the blacksmith, dancing and singing, and fire making. If you have time, they also offer a bushwalk.
