About this spot
The town of Custer was founded by gold miners in 1879. Supported by two nearby mines, the town reached a population of about 600 by 1896, but hard times fell on the town and, by 1910, it was a ghost town. The town was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Today several buildings remain, as well as interpretative signs and a small museum.
