About this spot
The Church of the Annunciation of Mary in Crngrob stands on a hill at the western edge of the Sorško field between Kranj and Škofja Loka. Its origin dates far back, perhaps it already stood in 1074, when churches in Loka were first mentioned, or after the second Crusade in 1147, when, according to oral tradition, pilgrims even came here from Paris. The present church, from its modest late Romanesque core (1273), has grown over the centuries to its current dimensions. From the single-nave Romanesque base, it developed into a two-nave, later into a three-nave church with a subsequently added presbytery of the hall type and a mighty bell tower on the south side. The church represents a cultural monument of national importance in terms of the synthesis of architecture, the development of medieval wall paintings, and interior furnishings, particularly the golden altars and valuable Baroque organs, and it ranks among the selected sacred monuments of Slovenia.
