Cortona is an Etruscan town in the mountains of the province of Arezzo, in the Italian region of Tuscany. The city is founded on one of the earliest inhabited hills of the province and with its relief-like streets similar to cities like Assisi and Volterra.
Cortona is not far from the border between Tuscany and Umbria. To the west, the wide Valdichiana valley spreads under the town, with the extinct volcano Monte Amiata (1738 m) in the background. Lake Trasimeno in Umbria can be seen from the higher parts of the city.
