About this spot
Leafy Constitution Square was once the heart of colonial Montevideo. On its west side stands the Iglesia Matriz, Montevideo's oldest public building, completed in 1799.

The intricacies of language are highlighted in the script round the fountain in Constitution Square, where the Italian architect (mis)spelt some words which differ slightly between Spanish and Italian. (Cannot remember exactly which ones as I speak neither language!)
Apparently the architect of Constitution Square went unpaid and vented his feelings by designing the railings in this interesting (phallic) design (as pictured)
There are a number of hills on the North shore of the river Plate and the Spanish numbered them. Thus the name of the city. Monte (hill), VI (sixth), de (counting from), O(este)(the west).
