About this spot
The City of Rocks National Reserve is a nature reserve managed by the National Park Service. The reserve, and the adjoining Idaho State Parks, Smokey Mountain State Park and Castle Rocks State Park, preserve an area of unusual granitic rock formations described by emigrants on the Californian Trail as "a city of tall spires,” “steeple rocks," and "the silent city." Today, the reserve is especially know for excellent rock climbing.

Camp Rock is a formation on which pioneers traveling along the California Trail from 1843 1882 left their names and marks with axle grease. The site was a common camping spot along the historic trail due to nearby springs. (Several miles further down the road from Camp Rock is Register Rock, which also has historic names and marks.)
