About this spot
The Cementerio de los Ingleses, or the English Cemetery, is located near Camariñas in the Costa da Morte region of Galicia, Spain. This area is known for its rugged coastline and treacherous waters, which have caused numerous shipwrecks over the centuries. The cemetery itself is situated on the coast, offering a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by sailors navigating these seas.

The English Cemetery is particularly associated with the tragic sinking of the HMS Serpent, a British Navy ship, in 1890. The Serpent was on its way to Sierra Leone via the Suez Canal when it struck rocks off the coast near Camariñas during a storm on the night of November 10th. Out of the 175 crew members aboard, only three survived. Most of the victims were buried in what came to be known as the English Cemetery, which was established on a hill overlooking the site of the wreck.
