About this spot
Cathedral Valley in Capital Reef National Park is one of the most amazing places in the American Southwest, yet it is rarely visited because of its remote nature and access requiring a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The valley is surrounded by colorful canyon walls and contains large butte formations reminiscent of large cathedrals.

This spot is actually outside the National Park. The spot features an old well drilling rig and truck, buried up to the axles in a salt flat. It is reached prior to entering (or after leaving) the valley proper.

The site of this old drill rig is one of only green spot on the entire Cathedral Valley loop road. There is a overflowing water trough at the spot. Apparently, the rig drilled a flowing artesian well and then never left the site again.
