About this spot
Cahal Pech is an ancient Maya archaeological site located in the town of San Ignacio. The site is believed to have been settled as early as 1000 BCE and was continuously occupied until about 900 CE. The site consists of a series of plazas and residential structures, including several impressive palaces, a ball court, and several stelae (carved stone monuments) and altars. The site is also known for its well-preserved examples of Maya art and hieroglyphs.

The site’s name means “Place of Ticks” in the Maya language, and reportedly is so named because it was a cattle pasture prior to excavation. The site is not as well known or as heavily visited as some of the more famous Maya sites but is open to visitors year-round and guided tours are available.
