About this spot
Just 15 kilometers from Hoi An is the Ba Ren Pig Market. The market has more than 100 buyers and sellers each day. As many as 1,000 piglets can be sold in a day ranging in age from 1 to 3 months old. The market was formed in the 1970s and is run mostly by women. Traders will wake up in the wee hours of the morning to buy pigs from nearby farmers to supply the market.

Pigs are contained in cages or baskets with multiple piggies in each basket. After inspection the pigs are weighed. Obviously, a pig will not stand on a scale, so a pig “hugger” or porter stands on the scale with the pig and then the person’s weight is subtracted from the total. When the deal is sealed, the porter puts the pig in the basket for its journey to a new home. Porters are paid by how many pigs they have weighed so they work at a fast pace regardless of the weather. It is not an easy job.

It is not unusual to see a bicycle headed down the road with a basket of pigs tied on the back. There are also trucks waiting to transport pigs to the neighboring provinces.
