About this spot
The Archaeological Site of Empúries, also known as Emporion in Greek and Emporiae in Latin, is a significant historical and archaeological site located on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain. It is renowned for its well-preserved ruins, which provide valuable insights into the ancient history of the Mediterranean region.

Empúries was founded around 575 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea, making it one of the earliest Greek colonies on the Iberian Peninsula. It was established as a trading and port city known for its connections with other Mediterranean cultures. Later, it became a Roman city.

The site contains two main archaeological areas—the Greek settlement (Emporion) and the Roman city (Emporiae). Each has its own distinct history and layout.
