About this spot
Aphrodisias was a small ancient Greek city in Caria. Today it is located near the modern village of Geyre in Turkey. It is named after Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love, whose statue resided in her temple located in this city.
The city was built near a marble quarry that was used extensively during the Hellenistic and Roman Empire. Sculptures made from this stone material made Aphrodisias a famous artistic center during the Roman era. Several examples of statuary have been found at Aphrodisias, as well as several representations of the Aphrodite of Aphrodisias that still survive in other parts of the Roman world, as far away as Civitas Pacensis in Lusitania (Beja, Portugal).
The site is in an earthquake zone and has suffered damage throughout history, especially in the 4th and 7th centuries. From the latter it failed to recover and fell into decay.
