Amberd Fortress is a 10th century ruin situated on the slopes of Mount Aragats at 2300m a.s.l. The name translates to Fortress in the Clouds. The fortress has had a varied history with the last major event in 1236 when the mongols nearly destroyed it. It remained until 1936 when excavations and attempts to preserve it began.

The church, situated just to the south-east, dates to 1026, and it makes for an attractive subject on the mountainside with the vast plains fading off into the distance below.
