Big Beaver

The trip up Ross Lake to the Big Beaver requires 3 days to really savor the area. The first section of the hike is a steady 1-mile descent to Ross Lake Dam, owned by Seattle City Light. Go left then right and head across the 540-foot high and 1,300-wide dam that created a 23-mile lake extending into Canada. (The base of the dam can be reached by going left on the road at the intersection and descending 2 miles to the base. Once across the dam, the trail parallels the shore of Ross Lake, soon passing the Ross Lake Resort which offers lodging and boat rides to trailheads along the lake: http://rosslakeresort.com/. The route climbs and descends for 6.2 miles over forested hillsides covered with moss. Shortly after crossing the Big Beaver Creek Bridge, the Ross Dam Trail ends. Go right to set up camp at the beautifully designed, scenic Boat Camp. On day 2, hike up the Big Beaver Valley Trail. The massive, ancient western red cedars are found after 3 miles, with the best grove to be found about 4.5 miles up the valley. One thousand year old trees, some over 15 feet in diameter, grow right along the trail. Beyond the first grove are active beaver ponds and marshes.
