About this spot
A chance to find unique views and small, flower covered meadows close to the base of Mount Baker. The Ptarmigan Ridge Trail is delightfully scenic but can be hazardous when the snow lingers, covering the trail in spots, throughout the entire summer. Do not venture out on any snow slope that is steep. Beware of the entire area when foggy or shrouded with clouds; it is very easy to get lost. However, on sunny days, glacier covered Mount Baker fills the lens while the rocks and pocket meadows create dramatic foregrounds. The trail starts off by descending from Artist Point then swinging around the open hillside below Table Mountain. At 1-mile, the Chain Lakes trail swings off to the right, (west) descending to a series of pretty lakes, which are forested and without views of Mount Baker. The Ptarmigan Ridge Trail continues on for another 3 miles passing campsites and excellent views along the route to the base of Mount Baker near the terminus of Rainbow Glacier.
