Hurricane Ridge

Throughout the year, Hurricane Ridge lives up to its name with the weather being at its worst during the winter. Winds of hurricane force batter this ridge and the snow, so near to the ocean, is thick and heavy. The result of this extreme weather is a rugged, subalpine, ridgecrest with open meadows. In early summer the meadows are covered with flowers, in the winter the hillsides and clumps of stunted, wind sculptured trees, are encased in snow. This is the main area in Olympic National Park where visitors can view the alpine world without resorting to extended treks into the mountains. Glaciers gleam in the sunlight and Mount Olympus, (the highest peak in the park), stands tall among the many peaks of the rugged Bailey Range. Walking the trails on the north side of the parking lot leads to views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Vancouver Island, Canada.
