About this spot
The Lamanai Archeological Reserve is a protected area home to the ancient Mayan city of Lamanai. The site was occupied as early at 16th century BC, became prominent in the Mayan civilization from about 4th century BC to 1st century CE when it started to decline. However, the area continued to be occupied through the 17th century AD. In addition to the Mayan ruins, the reserve is home to several old Spanish churches and the remains of a colonial-age sugar mill, which is the subject of this spot. The sugar mill dates to the 1850s through 1880s.
