Mark McDermott

Mark grew up on the East Coast of the United States and migrated to Alaska permanently in 1977 after he completed his Master’s Degree in Geophysics at Stanford. He spent 10 years doing field work as a geologist and geophysicist in remote Alaska and then 25 years as an Information Technology Manager for ConocoPhillips in Anchorage. Mark has published over 300 photographs in magazines, calendars, and books and is a self-taught professional watercolorist with over 35 years of experience. His favorite subjects are Alaskan landscapes and images captured from his travel and nature photography. He was a 2011 artist-in-residence for Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Commissioned paintings are a large part of his body of work, having completed over 100 commissions in the past decade. He has been juried into approximately 35 national and international watercolor exhibitions in the last five years. Mark now paints full time in Anchorage and travels extensively, recently visiting countries such as Morocco, New Zealand, South Africa, Iceland, Greenland, Bhutan, Antarctica, and China. His outdoor activities include photography and hiking.
