About this spot
This theater was built by the architects Paolo and Pietro Bezzi on the site where the mint-butchery “Herberge van Oistervant” used to be. Hence the name 'De Munte'.
The façade of the theater dates from 1819. Louis Damesme designed it in a neoclassical style and Eugène Simonis completed the whole by providing the pediment (1853) with a bas-relief on the theme “the harmony of the human passions”. The two upper floors, edged with a frieze of dark blue enamelled sheet steel, are the result of a postmodern intervention during the renovation works of 1985-86.
