About this spot
Originally built in 1559 during the Ming dynasty, the garden suffered multiple trashings during China’s tumultuous periods of foreign occupation and internal rebellion starting in the mid nineteenth century. Regrettably, as with many of China’s sights, the current iteration is a relatively recent restoration, and suffers huge hordes of tourists on a daily basis. It remains one of Shanghai’s major attractions, however. The gardens today date to the 1960s.
