Xitang is one of the popular water towns making a good day trip, or short overnight trip, from Shanghai or nearby Hangzhou.
A 100 yuan ticket is required to enter the town. It is a traditional water town with many historical buildings, and was picturesque enough to make the chase scene in Mission Impossible III.
The fame Tom Cruise brought to town means it is increasingly busy, particularly at the weekends, and the number of clubs and bars which have popped up in historical buildings can be incongruent, but this still makes for a nice excursion from Shanghai.
