About this spot
The village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Haute-Vienne has become horribly famous for the massacre of June 10, 1944. This peaceful village was surrounded by 200 soldiers of the 2nd SS Armored Division "Das Reich" in the afternoon. What was supposed to be a simple identity check turned into a brutal bloodbath. Men, women and children were shot and burned with cold-blooded efficiency. In total, the Nazis are said to have murdered 642 people, of which 207 children.

Oradour-sur-Glane, symbol of Nazi barbarism and memorial site, has been frozen in time since this day. During a visit, the burned cars and houses will give you an idea of the extent of the massacre. Read the various memorial plaques that can be found in the main road to the market square.

Near the village, the underground memorial center offers an overview of Nazi history from its rise to this tragic day, with an exhibition that invites reflection on peace and human rights. To honor the villagers, the Center has been trying since 2014 to give the fallen a face and have them engraved. More than 500 have been recovered to date.
