About this spot
The Ixelles Ponds (French: Étangs d'Ixelles) are two freshwater lakes and a park in the Brussels municipality of Ixelles.

The two ponds are the remains of a larger number of lakes in the valley of the Maalbeek, and are located between the Abbey of La Cambre in the south and Place Flagey in the north. The latter square was also built in 1860 after the filling in of a large number of lakes that the Maelbeek knew at the time (then 58, later 6). The two remaining lakes are located in a green zone and have a total length of approximately 700 meters and a width of approximately 50 meters each. They are separated from each other by the Memorial Square.

The lakes and the park are popular as a place to relax, although contact with the water and the immediately surrounding lawns are formally prohibited due to the presence of blue-green algae in the water and an increased risk of botulism in the zone.

In the park there are some old tall trees such as linden, tulip trees, maples, plane trees, weeping willows and chestnut trees. In addition, there are also two monuments to be found. One dates from 1894 and was made by sculptor Charles Samuel for Charles De Coster, author of La légende et les aventures héroiques, joyeuses et glorieuses d'Uilenspiegel et de Lamme Goedzak au pays de Flandres et ailleurs. The other is Jules Herbays' Dance from 1913. [1] The avenues surrounding the park are built with a number of remarkable buildings in eclectic, Art Nouveau and Art Deco style by architects such as Leon Delune, Aimable Delune, Ernest Blerot and Stanislas Jasinski.
