The project consists of an assemblage of individual volumes which differ boldly from one another in style: a hotel on stilts with a hardwood facade, a zinc-clad blob serving as a popular music auditorium, a shopping centre with multicoloured panels set into steel frames, and a cheerful activity centre with one bright pink facade section. With this cluster, Alsop, an architect of bright colours and unusual shapes, delivers, at single blow a diversity of the kind that a modernist inner city would normally develop only over many decades.
