The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme commemorates over 72,000 British and South African soldiers who died in the First World War and who have no known grave. It is the largest British war memorial in the world, both in size and the numbers commemorated. The memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and was unveiled by the Prince of Wales on 1st August 1932. Behind the memorial is the Anglo-French cemetery with 300 burials from each nationality
