About this spot
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in the village of Ponikve on the Šentviška plateau, which dates back to the Middle Ages, was burnt down and almost completely destroyed in World War II. In 1954, thanks to the persistent efforts of the then parish priest, Janez Lapanja, who asked the renowned architect Plečnik to draw up the plans, the reconstruction began. The main works, mostly carried out by local people on a voluntary basis, were completed in 1958 and the Baroque church was completely transformed by the restoration.

From the spot where it stands, it offers a beautiful view of the many hills above the valleys of the Soča, Idrijca and Bača rivers.
