About this spot
Thames Town is modelled on a traditional English market town. Designed by a British architectural firm and built from scratch (at a cost of around half a billion pounds) as part of the “One City Nine Towns” initiative during the tenth five-year plan (2001-2005), the idea was to spread Shanghai’s population away from the city centre and provide housing for workers at the local university. Despite most of the “British style” houses being snapped up by investors, very few people actually moved into the town - probably partly due to the poor transport links. Today it is a bizarre ghost town which mostly serves as a kitsch backdrop for wedding photographers.
