About this spot
Summerland is the location of a popular and scenic campsite on the Wonderland Trail. It is accessed by one of the nicest trails in Mt. Rainier National Park, gaining a mere 2,100 feet in 4.2 miles along its well graded ascent. The views of Mt. Rainier and the Emmons Glacier cause most hikers to gasp and pull out their cameras long before reaching the open meadowland below the rugged Meany Crest, Fryingpan Glacier and Little Tahoma Peak. In season, the wildflowers color the meadows all along the trail. Arriving at Summerland, the backcountry campsites and a sturdy rock shelter lie to the left in the trees. The surrounding meadows are closed due to overuse, so visitors are required to view the vibrant display of wildflowers, that bloom from mid-July to mid-August, from the constricting confines of the Wonderland Trail. By September all that remains are a few red monkey flowers lining the creeks.
