About this spot
Sultanahmet Park is the square lying between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. It is a great location to rest for a few minutes and appreciate two of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks. The park was named after Sultan Ahmed, sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1603 – 1617. He is probably best known for the construction of the Blue Mosque.

Sultanahmet is at the heart of the Old City and was the site of Constantinople’s Hippodrome. The park contains the “milion” stone—the Byzantine Zero Mile Marker for measurement of distances, the Egyptian Obelisk, and the German Fountain.

In April, the park is planted with colorful tulips (the national flower) for the Tulip Festival. In fact, The Netherlands can thank the Ottoman Empire for the tulip.

The Park is usually busy with tourists and locals. Try simit (bread dough dipped in molasses), Turkish ice cream, roasted chestnuts or misir (corn on the cob) from one of the street vendors. The lighted fountain, located in the middle of the park, changes colors with the different water displays in the evening.
