About this spot
South Gare is an area of reclaimed land and breakwater on the southern side of the mouth of the River Tees in Redcar and Cleveland. The area is entirely man made, constructed between 1866 – 1888 from million tons of slag from the local steelworks furnaces. Now the industry has largely gone the area has become a haven for wildlife with a variety of habitats attracting a wide range of birds.
