About this spot
Sevanavank or Sevan Holy Apostles Monastery is an Armenian monastery located on a peninsula of Lake Sevan, in Armenia. The monastery was founded in 874 by Princess Mariam Bagratuni and on the initiative of the future Catholicos Mashdotz of Yeghvart, on the site of a 4th century monastery destroyed by the Arabs.
Over time, Sevanavank was partially destroyed in the 1930s. Today, only two churches remain: Surp Arakelots ("Holy Apostles") and Surp Astvatsatsatsin ("Holy Mother of God"), which are part of the adjacent seminary, the Vazkenian Theological Academy. The monastery is also one of the most visited places by tourists in Armenia.
