Shoot with care
Be advised all plants, animals, rocks, minerals, and fossils within Badlands National Park are protected by federal law. Observe, photograph, and admire everything you see, but do not collect, pick, or disturb anything you find there. Keep a safe distance from wildlife—the Park recommends 100 feet.

About this spot
Sage Creek Rim Road is a 25-mile maintained dirt/gravel road that connects SD 44 and the Badlands Loop Road (240). The road hugs the drop off between South Dakota prairie and the typical Badlands formations.

Along this road you will find Hay Butte Overlook, Badlands Wilderness Overlook and Sage Creek Basin Overlook.

Perhaps the highlight of the road is the wildlife found in the Sage Creek Wilderness Area. Bison, bighorn, prairie dogs as well as birds are frequently seen from the road. Remember to keep a minimum of 100 feet between you and the wildlife. If you stop to view the wildlife or landscape, the Park asks that you pull into a pull-out or overlook to allow traffic to pass.

You will see “Beware of Rattlesnakes” signs posted throughout Badlands N.P. They hibernate in prairie dog holes during winter but in summer they are out and about.
