The museum was founded in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808. The Rijksmuseum is home to an extensive collection of Dutch art and artifacts dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, including masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, and Jan Steen. The museum also houses a collection of Asian art, a library, and a research center.
