About this spot
Prohor Pčinjski Monastery is an important Serbian Orthodox monastery located in the south of Serbia, near the town of Vranje and close to the border with North Macedonia. Nestled on the slopes of the Kozjak Mountain, it is one of the oldest and most significant cultural and religious centers in the region.

Founded in the 11th century by Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes in honor of Saint Prohor of Pčinja, the monastery has been a spiritual beacon for centuries. It played a crucial role during the Ottoman period as a center of Serbian culture and education, and later as a haven for refugees during World War II.

The monastery complex features a main church, dedicated to the Holy Virgin, and several smaller chapels. The architecture is characterized by a combination of Byzantine and Serbian styles, with beautiful frescoes adorning the walls inside. Many of these date back to the 14th century and showcase the rich artistic heritage of the region.

In addition to its religious and cultural significance, the Prohor Pčinjski Monastery is also home to a valuable collection of medieval manuscripts, liturgical books, and icons. The monastery has been an important pilgrimage site for centuries and continues to draw visitors from around the world for its spiritual and historical significance.
