About this spot
Located amid rugged desert canyons and mountains in what is now the southwestern corner of Jordan, Petra was once a thriving trading center and the capital of the Nabataean empire. Accessed via a narrow canyon called Al Siq, it contains tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs. Its most famous structure is 45m-high Al Khazna, also known as The Treasury. This structure was carved deep into the rockface and remained protected from wind and rain . The details on the facade are still evident.
