Peter’s Stone is a large limestone outcrop and
is the main feature at the head of Cressbrook
Dale near Wardlow Mires. A local landmark
that can be easily spotted from the roadside.
The stone used to be a gibbet and is commonly referred to as ‘Gibbet Rock’. A gibbet is a place to display the bodies of executed people. It is rumoured that the last gibbet in the UK was performed here on Anthony Lingard, a local man from Tideswell who murdered a local girl, Hannah Oliver from Wardlow Mires. The
gibbeting took place in 1815 and his body was left for months for all to see.
The dale itself is a National Nature Reserve, with a mixture of wild flowers and wildlife. In May the area is one of the prime spots in the Peak District
to see the wild orchids.
