About this spot
This is an iconic traffic intersection in Shanghai, where the two main elevated roads intersect (Chengdu Bei Road and Yan’an Road). The central column, not visible from above, contains dragon motifs. While the design is purely decorative, there are a number of urban myths suggesting that the design was added to appease a sleeping dragon below the excavation site which had held up construction of central column. Why nine? Chinese folklore is replete with tales of the dragon’s nine children, and the Chinese word for nine sounds like the word for long-lasting.
