About this spot
The Johnson Ridge Observatory is a visitor center and viewpoint located at the end of the Spirit Lake Highway within Mount Saint Helens Volcanic National Monument. When open, the observatory is definitely worth a visit to learn about the volcano and the story of its eruption in 1980. It is named after U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) volcanologist David A. Johnston, who was camping near the present day observatory when the mountain erupted, one of 57 people killed by the eruption. There is a fee to visit the observatory, but not visit the viewpoint.
