Mt. Assiniboine is a Canadian treasure that features dramatic mountains, clear lakes, grizzly bears, and enough scenic vistas to keep a landscape photographer busy for years. Almost completely primitive, the only way to get to this beautiful spot is to backpack in, or to rent a helicopter. Once here you can stay at a charming rustic lodge and cabins, or you can stay in one of two somewhat more primitive campgrounds. A fine, well developed assortment of trails takes a landscape photographer laden with all the gear to many awesome viewpoints. Dramatic skies almost guaranteed.
This is a serious wilderness mountain location in the Canadian Rockies. Depending on your gumption, or lack thereof, you may want to evaluate limiting your visit to the spring and summer, or visiting during the edge seasons or even deep winter. Consider your capabilities and tolerance for mountain weather. Whatever the time of year, it's beautiful.
This is definitely a place to plan for a multi-day visit. There are easily accessible "gimme" locations where you can quickly shoot the Classic Canadian Rockies images. With a bit more work, you can hike basically in every direction from the lodge to another spectacular viewpoint. This is a landscape photographer's playground of the first order.
The lodge is privately run by a family who loves what they do. The food is excellent, and the individual cabins, while far from luxurious, are snug and warm. You will sleep well, which is great considering you'll probably be traipsing all over the mountains in search of the The Mother Of All Landscape Photos.
