About this spot
The Preveli Monastery, also known as Moni Piso Preveli, is a colorful monastery overlooking the southern shoreline of Crete with a stunning view of Libyan sea. The monastery is famous for hiding Allied soldiers during the German occupation following the Battle of Crete in World War II. The monks, along with local villagers, assisted stranded soldiers with an escape route to the Middle East. The monastery has a small museum with wonderful icons and other religious artifacts. While photography is allowed on the portion of the grounds open to the public; unfortunately, it is not allowed in the museum.
