About this spot
Middleton Top is part of the High Peak Trail running from Cromford to Parsley Hay. At Middleton Top is the old engine house which is the last surviving winding engine on the High Peak Railway. The stationary engine was used to wind trucks up and down the nearby Middleton Incline which has a gradient of 1 in 8.

Nowadays the engine house is closed to the public except on certain show days when you can watch the pump in action. However, the building itself is on public grounds where you can photograph this piece of history with its intricate
brickwork and towering chimney.
