About this spot
The Menin Gate Memorial in the Belgian town of Ypres (Ieper) commemorates nearly 55,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the First World War but have no known grave. The memorial was unveiled in 1927 and every night at 8pm the Last Post Ceremony takes place under the gate. With the exception of the 4 years when Belgium was occupied in the Second World War, this has taken place every single night since 1928. The memorial was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.
