Although the hike is difficult, the view you get from the bottom of Uncle Tom’s Trail is worth every step and every breath! The trail is named after H.F. Richardson known as “Uncle Tom” to his contemporaries. He built a trail of ropes and rope ladders into the canyon and in the late 1890’s used to lead guests on hikes to see the lower falls. Today there are 328 metal steps built by the park service that take you about ¾ of the way down the canyon. If you are physically able, I highly recommend you make the trip, because the view is spectacular.
