About this spot
Discover the fortress, the lair of the brigand lords known as the “Sangliers des Ardennes” located at the top of a narrow rocky outcrop, overlooking the Ourthe valley. You can access it via a forest track from Ferme de Palogne or by taking the Circum Castellum, a discovery walk.

This remarkable site in the Liège Ourthe dominates the surroundings and has always been a natural refuge for the region's inhabitants. A garrison was established there from the end of Antiquity until the beginning of the 5th century, while in the 9th century the place served as shelter for the monks of Stavelot fleeing from the Normans. It then became the centre of an estate dependent on the abbey and a fortified castle was built there. Much later, at the end of the Middle Ages, the site fell into the hands of the brigand lords, known as the “Sangliers des Ardennes”. It was eventually bombed and destroyed on the orders of Charles V in 1521.
