About this spot
The Great Ocean Road offers many photo ops. Just five minutes away from the Twelve Apostles is Loch Ard Gorge.

The gorge is named after the clipper Loch Ard. The ship ran aground on the reef during bad weather in 1878. Out of the fifty-four passengers only two survived—Tom Pearce and Eva Carmichael. Tom washed onto the beach but went back into the water when he heard cries for help. As you may have guessed, the nearby Tom and Eva Lookout on the Great Ocean Road are named for these two teenagers.

The Gorge is surrounded by jagged cliffs and acres of bushland. From the main parking lot, you can explore several paths on the top side of the gorge, including the Cemetery. Or go to the main lookout for the wide view of the gorge then head down the stairs to the sandy beach with its turquoise waters. The beach is protected by yellow limestone cliffs and is a great location for landscape shooters and offers opportunities for bird and people photography. It is one of the few places in Port Campbell N.P. where you can access the beach.
