About this spot
The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. The market covers 61 streets and has over 4,000 shops. Its construction started in 1455 soon after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople and as it expanded, it swallowed up the surrounding area. The main trade routes all passed through the Grand Bazaar giving it access to abundance, variety, and quality of goods.

The Bazaar’s merchants were organized in guilds. After a monopoly was formed the number of traders and shops was frozen. They only way to join at that point was through inheritance or retirement.

The Bazaar has survived numerous fires, earthquakes, and European competition. Today as many as 250,000 – 400,000 people visit it each day. On its 550th birthday (2011), the Grand Bazaar Artisans Assoc. claimed it was the most visited monument in the world.

The market is located inside the walled city in the district of Fatih and is open each day except Sundays and bank holidays.

The bazaar covers 30,700 sq. meters and can be intimidating at first. It can be a maze, so pay attention to your exit points. Things to buy at the market: rugs, ceramics, metalware, textiles, jewelry, sweets, and spices. Expect to bargain.
