About this spot
Indian Bar is a popular camping area along the Wonderland Trail. Located 8.7 miles south of the White River Road and 7.6 miles north of the Steven Canyon Road, this is one of the more isolated backcountry areas on the east side of Mt. Rainier. The Indian Bar area is a huge boulder covered flood plain of the nascent Ohanapecosh River surrounded by lush green meadows. The main points of interest here are an old, rustic, shelter built in 1940 by the Civil Conservation Corp, (the CCC) and the scenic Wauhaukaupauken Falls of the Ohanapecosh River as it heads down a narrow gorge to the valley below. The most interesting and unique mountain views are found roughly 1 mile south of Indian Bar at about the 5,600 foot level, in the open meadows, where a small tarn offers a chance to capture Mt. Rainier and its reflection. Finally, this area is the home to mountain goats. Family groups of nannies and kids are often spotted on the hillsides around Indian Bar.
