About this spot
Hwange N.P. is Zimbabwe’s largest national park and is best known for the large number of elephants who take advantage of the park’s man-made waterholes during the dry season. As many as 40,000 elephants are found in Hwange—almost half of Zimbabwe’s entire elephant population. Super herds of up to 350 can be found. The Big 5 … lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and African buffalo … live within the park’s boundary but depending on the season and how much time you have, you may not see all five.

Dry season runs from June to October which brings the elephants to the waterholes. The rainy season is November to March. Rain disperses the wildlife, but it brings lush green vegetation and excellent bird watching ops to Hwange.

There is a high risk of Malaria in Zimbabwe, especially during the rainy season. Bring malaria meds with you. Other recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid and Yellow Fever. Most camps provide mosquito netting in your tent.

The African Bush Camps website includes “Seasonal Information.” The month-by-month summary is extremely helpful if planning a trip on your own.

The park is surrounded by large private game reserves. Staying in a private reserve provides for a more “personal” experience. Private concessions offer more flexibility with fewer vehicles on the road and less restrictions. They allow for off-road driving and perhaps even a night drive. I would recommend staying in one of the neighboring concessions … this way you can easily travel between Hwange and the private reserve.

Accommodations run from luxury tent to rustic bush camps. There are numerous camps so you should be able to find a camp that fits your budget.
