About this spot
Haytor is probably the most iconic of all the tors on Dartmoor. This is partly due to its size, elevation (457m) and its position, with a huge (almost 360 degree) vista overlooking most of central and south Devon and into Dartmoor. Historically this tor has been known by many names Idetordoune (1566), Ittor Doune (1687), Idetor (1737), Eator Down (1762) and Itterdown (1789) but more recently Haytor (Also Hay Tor, Hey Tor or Haytor Rocks). Like all tors it is composed of granite. It is also well known for its adjacent quarry in which was mined Haytorite, a variety of quartz.
